Douwe Egberts
HeritageIn 1753 Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses opened their grocery store 'De Witte Os' ('The White Ox') in the small village of Joure in the Netherlands selling mostly tea and coffee. Their son, Douwe Egberts joined the business in around 1780 and with Joure's easy access to the waterways, the tea and coffee business flourished. The company was renamed Douwe Egberts and continued to expand acquiring a regional reputation. In 1919, Douwe Egberts went from local to national with headquarters in Utrecht and in the 1920s the iconic Douwe Egberts seal was introduced. |
Pickwick TeaDouwe Edberts have been blending tea since its small beginnings in 1753 and until 1937 the tea was marketed under the name Douwe Egberts. This changed when the company decided to look for an English name and the wife of one of the directors suggested Pickwick after Charles Dickens' novel 'Pickwick Papers' which she had been reading at the time.
